This example shows a VECTOR graphic. Common file formats include .eps and .ai

VECTOR graphics are made up of lines and their backgrounds are transparent.

This example shows a RASTER graphic. RASTER graphics are made up of pixels, like a photograph, not lines, and their backgrounds are not transparent. Common file formats include .tiff and .jpg

When a VECTOR graphic is enlarged, the quality is maintained. The edges look crisp and clean no matter how large the graphic is made.

When a RASTER graphic is enlarged, the quality is degraded. The edges look jagged and soft. The more a raster is enlarged, the poorer the quality becomes.
